We had a weekend in New York in August 2001, a few weeks before 9/11. Our first excursion was by boat, out to see the Statue of Liberty, with a tour of Ellis Island, where most of the immigrants were received. This has been turned into a really interesting place to visit.
We spent some time in Central Park, first having a short ride in a horse drawn carriage. The driver pointed out the large rocks that were visible, apparently New York is built on this rocky terrain, it's why the earlier builders were able to go so high.

Using mostly the subway, and our feet, we had a look around the city over 3 days, Times Square, 5th and 6th Avenue, Grand Central Station - lovely building - and the Radio City Music hall which is a lovely art deco theatre, we took the guided tour. We also found time to look round the Guggenheim museum, and take in a show, 42nd Street, in a theatre, appropriately, on 42nd Street. We just called in the theatre in passing and got good return seats on the day.
We had to go up one tall building, and went for the Empire State as it has more history and, we thought, ambience, than the World Trade Centre. We had been advised to go up late afternoon, so that we could see the view in daylight, and then wait for it to get dark, and see all the lights of New York as well.
