Cornwall

We went to Cornwall for a  couple of days only in September 2003, mainly to visit the Eden Project. This is now the number one tourist destination in Cornwall., and justifiably so. One visit is not enough, we will have to go back. We also hoped to see the Lost Gardens of Heligan, but as we only had 2 days, and wanted to tour the coast a little as well, did not have the time. We actually stayed in Falmouth, and spent another hour or so the next morning wandering the town and the harbour, there is a real working port, and the coast beyond the town.

Our second day was also our last, by the evening we had to start for home, so we drove round the north coast before joining the A30 back home, just taking a short stop in Padstow before dark. Another pretty town and harbour, with a lovely bay leading to the sea.

In the last part of the day after we left the Eden Project, we drove on past the Lost Gardens of Heligan down to the coastal town of  Mevagissey. We just had an hour or so to wander the harbour before twilight, but there is more to it than we were able to see in the short time we had.

Our second day was mostly spent driving to the far west, The Lizard, Mount Bay and Lands End. The Lizard is the most southerly point, and rugged and unspoilt. However, when we arrived at Land's End we discovered there was no way to the actual coastline, just a huge car park, in front of a large building, and a sign inviting us to pay the money and 'enjoy the Land's End experience'. I've put the link to their website, but along with a good few others we declined,  told the car park attendant we were just turning around, and drove a little further on to Cape Cornwall, where we found a National Trust car park and another unspoilt cliff walk. 'Cape' Cornwall is so named as it was once thought to be the most westerly, until a new survey confirmed Land's End to be, but Cape Cornwall is the place to go if you just want to walk amongst beautiful scenery, and an abundance of wild plants.
